Crime Victims

The Crime Victims Project represents low-income residents throughout Illinois who are victims of violent crimes with claims under the State's Crime Victims Compensation Act. This Act provides up to a maximum of $27,000 in any one case to a victim of a violent crime in order to assist him/her in paying medical or counseling bills and to compensate the victim for time lost at work, or lack of support due to the crime.  In addition, in cases where the victim is killed, the family can get up to $5,000 for funeral expenses, and those dependent on the deceased victim (usually his/her children) can avail themselves of the maximum available compensation due to loss of support, as can dependents of a victim who becomes disabled and is unable to work due to a violent crime.
