Public Benefits; SSI; Social Security; Food Stamps; Health Law

LAF helps people apply for and maintain public benefits, including Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Medicaid, Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits, and Food Stamps, through a telephone advocacy system.  People can call 888-893-5327 to speak to an intake worker; if they have a problem we can help with, an attorney or paralegal will call them back.

Our SSI Advocacy Project represents people already receiving some form of cash assistance from the state of Illinois, with applications for disability benefits under the SSI and SSDI programs at the initial, reconsideration, and hearing stages.  Cases requiring representation at the District Court or Circuit Court level are screened for representation by LAF or private attorneys.

People applying for SSI or SSDI benefits who are not receiving cash assistance from the state of Illinois may be helped in our neighborhood offices or referred to private attorneys.

LAF also helps people who are uninsured reduce or eliminate bills from not-for-profit hospitals.
