Free help in filing income tax returns is
available for the elderly and low or moderate income households.
There are several tax clinics that will prepare tax returns for free that are
operating now and until April 15. There are over 30 locations in Cook County.
Not only is the service free, but you can get your refund faster because your
return will be filed with the IRS electronically. If you also
choose to have your refund direct deposited to your bank or credit union, you
can get your refund even faster. If you don't have a bank account, you
may be able to get help in opening a bank account or a prepaid debit card.
Low and moderate income clients. The Center for Economic
Progress and Ladder Up will provide free income tax counseling for families
with annual incomes less than $50,000 and individuals with annual incomes less
than $25,000. Volunteer tax preparers can assist in filling out federal and
state income tax returns for the year 2009, and, in some cases, for prior
years. Most sites will be open between January 23 and April 15, 2010.
