Illinois Migrant Legal Assistance Project
2010 Summer Internship
POSITION & PAY: Summer interns at IMLAP work with Spanish-speaking migrant farmworkers in Illinois. IMLAP has been at the forefront of farmworker litigation for decades providing legal representation to migrant and seasonal farmworkers harvesting crops, detasseling corn, or cultivating nursery products throughout Illinois. Interns will be assigned to one of four satellite offices and be responsible for its daily operations (Mendota, Peoria, Rantoul, or Carbondale). Interns will be expected to find summer housing in the community they are assigned to. Internships begin on June 1 and end August 14, 2010. Students will earn a summer stipend, plus mileage. Students are highly encouraged to seek funding from other sources. Please note there are no openings in our Chicago office for the 2010 summer.
QUALIFICATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES: You must be fluent in Spanish and have a reliable vehicle. You must be assertive, independent, responsible, and sensitive to the legal problems faced by migrant farmworkers. Cross-cultural experience is a plus. Under the direction of supervising attorneys, interns will primarily do outreach, interview and represent farmworker clients, and educate farmworkers about their rights. Interns may also be asked to negotiate claims, advocate before federal and state agencies, do legal research, and help develop litigation. Common legal problems include: false promises, wage violations, run-down housing, unsafe working conditions, and denials of public benefits.
