Student Position (Part-Time, Temporary) LAF Crime Victim’s Project  

 

Background: The Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAF) is the largest provider of civil legal services to low-income residents of Cook County.  LAF represents individual clients and groups in a wide variety of poverty law issues such as tenant’s right, consumer rights, foreclosure defense, public benefits, and family law.  See our website at www.lafchicago.org for a description of our practice.

 

There is a student position currently open in LAF’s Crime Victim Project.  The Project provides legal assistance to victims of violent crime and their families by pursing claims for compensation before the Illinois Court of Claims; providing referral to needed community and legal services; and conducting community outreach and education.  The position pays $9.00 per hour, 16 to 20 hours per week.  The job begins in late August and is presently scheduled to end at the close of 2010. 

 

Responsibilities:  The student’s tasks include interviewing clients and witnesses; preparing applications for compensation and related documents; gathering documentation from employers, medical providers, and others; conducting research; and identifying community and legal services for clients. The Project operates out of LAF’s Westside office, located in the old Sears corporate headquarters at 3333 West Arthington between Homan and Kedzie. Arthington is ¼ mile south of I-290 and the Kedzie-Homan Blue Line Stop, and ¼ mile north of Roosevelt Road.

 

Requirements:  Must be fluent in Spanish, have completed at least two years of college, committed to public interest work, possess sound writing and inter-personal communication skills, and must be available during regular business hours.
